Fearsome Journeys: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy by  Jonathan Strahan (editor)

Started: 2014-07-03 / Finished: 2014-09-15

Rating:4

2014-07-09: Actual start date wasn’t recorded as I was just looking for something besides the novels I that wasn’t enjoying. Only one story in but it was a pretty good one.

2014-07-15: I’m 5-6 stories in now and I quite liked the first three but it’s slacked off a little since then. The current one, Black Company(?), is interesting, we’ll see where it goes.

2014-09-15: The last three stories were quite good, especially the last one, The High King Dreaming.

Rating is probably a little inflated due to contrast with the Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination where I was unhappy with the ending.

Queers Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the LGBTQ Fans Who Love It     Sigrid Ellis     2014-07-01               DNF   DNF

2014-07-09: Actual start date wasn’t recorded as I was just looking for something besides the novels that I wasn’t enjoying. So far this appears to be essays on why the Doctor is so meaningful to gay folks. That’s nice but I’m only two essays in and it’s getting old already.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson

2014-07-08: Burn out and an exhausting weekend road trip so not much reading lately. Read the prologue and half of chapter 1 and am very underwhelmed. Feels like typical epic fantasy that’s been done. My reading tastes seem to have changed.

2014-07-08: Burn out and exhausting weekend road trip so not much reading lately.

2014-06-30: Hugo-related reading burnout has caused me to take a little break this weekend AND this book really isn’t working too well for me. Maybe I’m just not up for all the oddness. I enjoyed Saturn’s Children so I think my issue with this one has to do with timing/mood more than anything else.

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

2014-07-08: Burn out and exhausting weekend road trip so not much reading lately.

2014-06-26: Slow going as I’m alternating books and I took a reading break for day or two. This book started out interesting, then kind of lost me on the flashback, then came back to the “present” and then got interesting what with the mysterious person that the ancillary is trying to find because of a mysterious object that person has. I’m intrigued enough to go a few more chapters but the only thing I’m certain of at the moment is that I don’t like the Raadch.

2014-06-30: I’m suffering Hugo-related reading burnout AND this book really isn’t doing anything for me. It’s okay but I’m not really caring for the back and forth of two stories, one of which is really an extended flashback.

Hard Magic by Larry Correia

Hard Magic     Larry Correia     2014-06-21     2014-06-26     ***1/2

2014-06-26: Slow going as I’m alternating books and I took a reading break for day or two. I like it very much BUT…. with a lot of caveats. First is the big cliché of the good vs evil secret organizations fighting for dominance. Can authors today really not come up with anything else? Then there’s the veiled secret that Madi is Jake’s older brother . Again, having your hero related to the villain is a cliché. And of course there’s the ultra powerful evil sorcerer with the dooms day device. It’s very entertaining and well written, I’m just kind of tired of the clichés. But that’s okay, I’m certain that it won’t come down to the final life and death struggle where Jake is nearly defeated but then figures out a new twist on his power and comes out victorious though beat to shit for the umpteenth time. Oh wait, we’ve already had one of those beat downs so I guess that is what will happen.

2014-06-27: Despite the cliches it did manage to somewhat break the mold. Having Faye turn out to be the hero was cool as ey was by far the most interesting character in the book. The reveal on Madi was also done in an interesting way and earlier than I expected. Hopefully book two will feature more of Faye, Jake is optional in my opinion as he’s too much in the Harry Dresden mold to be interesting (I tired of that series after about book five). I’m tempted to give this four stars as it definitely grabbed me and was an engrossing read. Even when I was bored with the Jake/Madi thing I kept skimming to get back to other characters. Too bad about Delilah. Jane was likable but boring as was Dan. Francis and Heinrich were interesting and I’d like to see more of them. I liked that Correia had an explanation for where the magic comes from although I’m not interested in the thing that’s chasing the magic maker and that conflict. I liked that the Tokugawa wasn’t a cut & dried villain. As in the real world, he thought he was doing the right thing, even though he was a rat bastard. Overall, quite good in a action movie kind of way.

Parasite by Mira Grant

Parasite     Mira Grant     2014-06-19     2014-06-21     ***1/2

2014-06-21: I’m about halfway through this and quite enjoying it.

2014-06-22: Good but very annoying. I hate it when I’ve figured out things the characters haven’t. It makes me think the characters are stupid or naive. I knew about Sally at least at the first visit to Dr Cale and I think before that. I kept expecting someone to tell her as it seemed clear that they all knew or suspected but it just kept dragging out. Enjoyable and kept me reading but it really strained my suspension of disbelief.

PS. Hey look, I can cut and paste straight from LibraryThing.

Wakulla Springs by Andy Duncan & Ellen Klages

2014-06-18: I’m at the movie showing and it’s not very interesting so far. Set in the Jim Crow South which I find irritating. Would be more interesting if a time traveler would show up and shoot all the racists. I understand they were brought up that way but I don’t accept that as an excuse for bad behavior.

2014-06-18: Very good but I missed the SciFi/Fantasy connection.

2014-06-18: I think the aliens came around a little easily in the end but overall it was pretty good.

Equoid by Charles Stross

Equoid by Charles Stross star-fullstar-fullstar-fullstar-halfstar-null

2014-06-17: This might actually be a four but I think I’m suffering from overload due to all the Hugo related reading. I enjoyed the story and it’s just the kind of weird & humorous stuff that I like but I couldn’t quite get into it. The HPL bits were tedious and I skipped most of them though an accident of formatting in the epub lead me to read about HPL’s encounter with Shub-Niggurath which was good because it helped the rest make sense.
