1.5

2014-09-17: Wow, what an extreme dose of meh. I wasn’t expecting much, and that’s good because all I got was a bunch of bland… blandness. Nothing important really happens. No moral/philosophical points are explored. A guys buys a robot. The robot is just peachy keen in every way. It organizes his finances, and gets him to the gym and improves his diet and (you’d never guess this part) it has an awesome body and enjoys lingerie and related activities. It evens beats up another robot for him! But again, nothing really happens and the “story” was light and pleasant but nothing happened. Did I mention that nothing happened? I mean some stuff happened but it was minor and, you know, whatever.

The Human Division by John Scalzi

Title by Author: The Human Division (Omnibus) by John Scalzi

2014-09-07 / 2014-09-14

Rating: 4.5

2014-09-12: Enjoying this very much. I like the serial format, with very different “chapters” that still move the overall story ahead.

2014-09-15: That was good stuff. The serial format really worked for me. I loved that the stories were so different but all pointed to the one central story line. I hated that the central story line didn’t get resolved. I guess that leaves him room for more books though. The one issue I have is that many of the characters speak in Scalzi’s voice.  I might not notice this if I didn’t read his blog but I notice that a lot of the characters (Harry, Hart, Danielle, even Abumwe to an extent) sound a lot like his blog posts. They have that same kind of snarky, sarcastic style that I enjoy so much, possibly because it’s similar to my own style, but when so many characters have a similar voice it becomes noticeable. I found it slightly jarring when even the aliens were being snarky.  That worked in a book like Year Zero which was in no way attempting to be serious, but in THD it was a little off putting. So much so that I was forced to knock off an half a star, well, that and the fact that I have trouble giving a five to a book that’s pure entertainment.

Cryptozoic Man #1 thru #4     Walter Flanagan     2014-09-06     2014-09-06     1-star

2014-09-07: Weird shit.

2014-09-09: I didn’t initially connect this to the guy from Comic Book Men. Once I did I began to understand a bit as he seems sort of weird himself.  Not serial killer, bad, weird, just odd.  On the other hand these books were just fraking weird and did nothing for me, though I’ll confess that I didn’t give them much of a chance.

PS. I have no idea why the covers are stacked down like that.  Let’s just say that WordPress isn’t very friendly and leave it at that.

2014-08-15: Not sure when I started this one but it was a while back.

2014-08-22: Still reading it, but it’s on the ipad and I don’t read much there. Might have move to the phone to get it finished.

2014-09-09: Still reading this, just not very often because I haven’t put it on the Nexus yet.  The iPad is just a bit too heavy for comfy reading.

The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination edited by John Joseph Adams

The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination: Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius by John Joseph Adams (editor)

Started: 2014-07-06 / Finished: 2014-09-09

Rating: 3 (Would be 4 if the The Space Between and following stories had been in a different book.)

2014-07-09: Actual start date wasn’t recorded as I was just looking for something besides the novels that I wasn’t enjoying. I think this date is correct though. Only one story in but it was a pretty good one.

2014-07-15: Some good stuff, some meh stuff. Mostly good but nothing great. All of this short story reading is reminding me that I don’t generally like anthologies that much.

2014-09-03: Restarted the other day and very much enjoying these.

2014-09-07: Was enjoying the short stories immensely and then ran into this stupid Comte de Saint Germain novella that really, REALLY, doesn’t belong in this anthology. It’s just going on and on, and there is possibly a mad scientist and time travel involved which might be interesting if the author would stop talking about nuns and sick people and voice and visions. It’s not a bad story and in another anthology I might enjoy it but it doesn’t fit in with this anthology and it’s TOO LONG to be where it is.

2014-09-08: The story I was complaining about was The Space Between by Diana Gabaldon.  It was a poor fit for this anthology AND the ending sucked.  After a VERY LONG story… nothing happens. Two mysterious men go poof and the want-to-be nun decides to kiss a guy. Nothing is explained and there’s no payoff for suffering through this misplaced monstrosity.  With a better ending and in a different anthology it would be a decent story.

2014-09-09: OMFG will this book never end!  There have been a couple of good ones since The Space Between but holy shit was it really necessary to put EVERY story in there?  I think part of it is my shortening attention span but there are a number of these that didn’t belong here.

2014-09-16: It ended. The last story, The Food Taster’s Boy was a downer. Actually, I think everything after The Space Between was a downer so my advice would be to read up to, but not including, that story, and then throw the book away. Or, I suppose you could keep it but treat the remaining stories like a separate book.  There was some good stuff there but it definitely wasn’t in the same vein as the earlier stories that featured a lot of humor and were more accurately Mad Scientists stories while the end of the book was more Washed Up Villains than Mad Scientist.

Fatale, Book 1: Death Chases Me           Ed Brubaker         2014-09-06         2014-09-07        ***

2014-09-07: Not bad. A mix of pulp/noir/Lovecraft/mystery that was interesting, but not interesting enough to pursue.
